Question by Mia: Any wine enthusiasts that can give me some details and thoughts on wine essence kits?
My boyfriend has newly found love of wine and can’t fill his head with enough knowledge on the subject. I have seen these kits, “wine essence kits”, that are made to enhance the understanding of all the different components of wine tasting…as I am sure you know. Which leads to my question, would you recommend such kits to a wine lover with an already fairly refined palate? And if so, they range in size and cost from 17-70 essences and $ 50 – $ 400, so what should I look for when considering my purchase?

The kit should includes these nine essences—sweet, bitter, sour, smooth, acetic, flowery, fruity, oak and tannin—individually bottled and carefully prepared so that the suggested dilution corresponds to their concentration in wine. You’ll also enjoy wine more and feel completely at ease when you’re ordering it in restaurants or discussing it with other Wine Enthusiasts. Kit also should includes, a detailed instruction booklet, all necessary labels and a wine tasting glass.

Have you considered spending the same money of types of wines you and he have not yet enjoyed?
I may be all wet but, keeping notes in a $ 0.79 notebook while shooting live bullets on a wine safari is money much better spent than shooting blanks… Get some advice and buy him one expensive bottle (or several great inexpensive bottles) of wine(s) that he has never tried. Don’t be afraid to soak up an education of your own along the way!
